Set in 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, during the height of the Cold War, “The Shape of Water” is a nostalgic and visually stunning film that pays homage to the classic fairy tales of yesteryear. The story revolves around Elisa Esposito (played by Sally Hawkins), a shy and lonely janitor who works at a government research facility. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she encounters a strange, amphibious creature (played by Doug Jones) that is being held captive at the facility.

Through Elisa and Amphibian Man’s story, del Toro explores themes of isolation, loneliness, and the importance of human connection.
